Spiritual Apprenticeship – Chapter 3

The Requirement for Apprenticeship:

The ultimate reason for apprenticeship is to make men become masters of their areas of calling. Jesus in calling His first set of disciples told them what to do in order to become fishers of men: “And Jesus said come ye after me, and I will make you to become fishers of men – Mark 1:17

Fervency: (willingness, eagerness and enthusiasm).

The fervency of the apprentice stirs up in the trainer an unusual, imparting skills in the apprentice that is ever growing and permanent. The spirit man must be ready, the mind willing and the entire body eager to lean.

Meekness:

Refusing to overestimate one’s self is a mark of meekness. The inability to make a correct assessment of self is a great problem to a lot of people. There cannot be a strong evidence of meekness than submission. To change and accept better knowledge is a mark of maturity. Not to change is a simple foolishness. And to be foolish means to remain stagnant and die in the same spot.

Patience:

Patience goes beyond waiting. Patience is only a part of it. Patience could therefore be defined as discipline plus time.

Patience is a test of Christian character. Patience is not easily practiced by self. It is best experienced, assessed and appreciated under some form of leadership and guidance.

Chastening, a disciplinary term for coaction, when used on an apprentice makes it possible for him to become a partaker of the trainer’s character.
